Brussels will host the first Human Cities urban festival in early May.

This biannual event will be a showcase for raising awareness of public spaces in Brussels through various meetings and events. The festival will kick off on 6 May 2010 with a NICHE conference, coproduced with BOZAR and A+ Architecture. A symposium and scientific workshops will welcome numerous Belgian and international experts, professionals and students in urban planning, architecture, design and sociology, as well as key figures from public service. They will share their experiences, work and thoughts on urban planning, and its general uses, focusing particularly public spaces.

Families and the public at large will be honoured through a series of more playful activities organised in collaboration with several local partners such as Recyclart, Citymine[d], Turtelwings, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, WIELS, BRASS. Throughout the festival the «Places to Be» exhibition will creatively promote the work and reports selected from the international call for entries launched under the framework of this European project.
The Bozarshop will showcase books about public space while Cinematek, twinned with BOZAR, will offer a selection of films and reports focused on the city and its human spaces. A Pecha Kucha will provide a forum for players in the public arena while various activities will be on offer for children, young and old, in the form of educational workshops or urban expeditions on the uses and appropriation of public spaces.

To emphasise the pleasure of this alternative appropriation of the city, an urban Sunday brunch will take place on 9 May 2010 in the vicinity of BOZAR. Other unique forms of entertainment will be organised throughout the festivities until 16 May. This festival is the result of a European partnership «Human Cities: sustainable urban design» supported by the European Commision’s «Culture 2007-2013» program. Launched by Pro Materia and l’ISACF-La Cambre, the initiative aims to establish an exchange of expertise, in a European context, in order to fuel an interdisciplinary debate on the sociocultural dynamics of sustainable design for urban public spaces. The aim is to promote a friendly and participatory approach for users and players involved in the city in order to encourage a more creative approach to managing urban public spaces.

Electrified 02 - Hacking Public Space

Kunstencentrum Vooruit en S.M.A.K. (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) zetten samen de stad Gent onder stroom met een nieuwe editie van Electrified. Van 3 april t.e.m. 13 juni 2010 laten ze je kennismaken met kunstenaars die de ‘publieke ruimte’ tot hun actieterrein maken onder de noemer Electrified 02 – Hacking Public Space.
Verwacht je aan opmerkelijke acties in de stad, nu eens subtiel en dan weer opvallend, soms aangekondigd maar vaak onverwacht. De uiteenlopende acties in de stad zullen een neerslag krijgen in het museum, waar (andere) werken van hedendaagse kunstenaars en een flashback’ naar de jaren 1970 en 1990 een rijke context schetsen van kunst in het openbaar (tastbaar of virtueel). Ateliers Urbains #1 : Flagey (CINÉMA)

Flagey est la plus grande place de Bruxelles. Au terme de six années de chantier, cet espace public d'envergure a fait peau neuve.

Flagey est située à la croisée de différents quartiers, populaires (rue Malibran,...) et bourgeois (autour des étangs), des réalités qui coexistent non sans tension. Le réaménagement de la place, vecteur d'un « renouveau » qui vise à y attirer de nouveaux habitants et de nouveaux commerces d'un standing supérieur à la moyenne actuelle, ne risque-t-il pas d’accentuer cette tension ? Et les habitants ont-ils conscience de ces cours d'eau cachés qui ont structuré l'urbanisation de leurs quartiers? Ville plurielle a l’ambition de se développer dans le quartier Nord et à Saint-Josse.

L'Escaut: une architecture du collectif?

Nieuwe Brusselse Bouwmeester stelt zich voor in BozarNaar aanleiding van de benoeming van Olivier Bastin tot eerste Bouwmeester van het Brussels Hoofdstedelijk Gewest, nodigt BOZAR ARCHITECTURE de architect uit voor een lezing in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten. De architect stelt er hij de realisaties van zijn bureau l’Escaut voor. l’Escaut heeft een pluridisciplinaire aanpak en hecht veel belang aan participatie van de burger in het ontwerpproces. Participatie gebeurt bij voorbeeld via overleg of workshops over architectuur. l’Escaut heeft de voorbije twintig jaar een aantal van de belangrijkste culturele gebouwen van de Franse Gemeenschap gebouwd. Bij voorbeeld het Théâtre National in Brussel (2004, in samenwerking met Architectes Associés en Gigogne), het Fotografiemuseum van Charleroi (1996, 2003, 2007, 2008) en de Cultuurzaal van Zinnik (Soignies) (tijdelijke vereniging van l’Escaut en Weinand) die onlangs feestelijk geopend werd. Het architectenbureau werkte ook mee aan de wijkcontracten « Maritiem » (2004) en « Schelde-Maas » (2005) (allebei in Molenbeek, samen met MSA), en organiseren ze regelmatig activiteiten voor de buurt. L’Escaut heeft ook publieke ruimtes, woningen, ateliers en bureaus ontworpen. In 2008 tekenden de architecten voor de scenografie van het Belgische paviljoen op de internationale tentoonstelling van Zaragoza. Tijdens zijn lezing in het Paleis voor Schone Kunsten put Olivier Bastin uit zijn twintig jaar ervaring en vertelt hij over zijn aanpak waarbij de interactie tussen de verschillende spelers centraal staat.

"CREATIVITE ET INNOVATION DANS LES VILLES EUROPEENNES, Alternatives culturelles, nouvelles solidarité sociales"

Banlieues d'Europe poursuit son travail de repérage de projets artistiques et de réflexion sur les alternatives culturelles, sociales, économiquesŠ A l'heure de la crise économique, il est urgent de mettre en perspective des projets alternatifs dans les quartiers des villes, à l'aide de regards croisés d'artistes, d'habitants, de chercheurs, d'élus, d'urbanistes, d'économistes de différents horizons, repérés en France, en Belgique, en Allemagne, en Roumanie, en Grande-Bretagne, en Italie.

Pendant trois jours, séances plénières, ateliers simultanés et débats s'alterneront autour de trois principales thématiques développées par des porteurs de projets artistiques et culturels :
- Espaces alternatifs : Appropriations des espaces publics, lieux culturels et artistiques, espaces virtuels.
- Educations alternatives et solidaires : Rencontre de ceux qui traitent la faillite du système et de ceux qui construisent l'alternative.
- Economie culturelle et sociale : levier d'insertion socioprofessionnelle et de développement urbain.

Ces rencontres seront l'occasion de découvrir de nouveaux projets et lieux culturels locaux à Bruxelles ainsi qu'à Liège.

Le service BATir de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles a le plaisir de vous inviter au colloque "Densification de la ville & Construction durable" ce jeudi 10 décembre.

PROGRAMME :

Comment densifier la ville qualitativement pour qu'elle tende à se développer durablement ? Le Bureau fédéral du Plan va jusqu'à annoncer une augmentation spectaculaire de la population bruxelloise. L'offre du logement tant public que privé est-elle à même de subvenir aux besoins existants et à venir ? Quelles sont les formes urbaines les plus appropriées qui puissent respecter le tissu urbain existant et capables de répondre à ces nouvelles demandes ? Le sujet est au coeur de réflexions déjà entamées par certains acteurs politiques et économiques, que ce soit à Bruxelles ou à Paris.

Des acteurs, provenant de divers secteurs (universitaires, institutionnel, privé) mais concernés par cette même question viendront présenter un exposé autour du thème. Chaque exposé sera suivi de questions-réponses.

The fifth issue of Footprint investigates the question of metropolitan form. The necessity to focus on the scale of metropolitan areas is manifest as this is the dominant scale of contemporary global life. The process of urbanisation and the size of urban agglomerations have dramatically increased since the last decades. These dynamics alone demand radically changed thinking about internal spatial organisation and the form of urban regions. Yet, scholarly focus at the regional level has shifted away from spatial thinking of overall form towards issues of governance, socio-economic statistics, and global networks. While these approaches provide insight into contemporary conditions, lost in translation is the question of metropolitan form: what are the characteristics of its spatio-physical structures? What are its distinguishable elements? And what are the factors that determine the transformation of form through time? By addressing the question of metropolitan form we try to extrapolate - scale-up - the research notions and methods of ‘urban morphology’ from the ‘urban’ to the ‘regional’ scale.

"The authors assess the effect of the demise of the grand narratives of the war on terror and jihad through martyrdom; consider whether Hamas is on the path to becoming a responsible regional actor; analyse Jordan's stake in the overall process of Middle East Peacemaking; and ask whether, in the light of the US administration's renewed efforts, there is a chance of breaking the impasse in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict."

Pour la huitième année, l’association Doc’Géo organise sa journée de la géographie, en partenariat avec l’UMR ADES du CNRS, l’UFR de géographie de l’Université de Bordeaux et l’Ecole doctorale Montaigne-Humanités. Cette journée de recherche ouverte en priorité aux master, doctorants et jeunes docteurs, est l’occasion de discuter entre jeunes chercheurs de toutes disciplines, autour d’un thème original en géographie. Cette année, nous avons choisi de nous intéresser à l’imaginaire dans la ville, ou la ville imaginée. Comment la ville est-elle rêvée, imaginée, idéalisée ou au contraire cauchemardée ? Comment les acteurs de la ville représentent et se représentent-ils leur territoire ? Le rapport à la ville ou à l’imaginaire est-il commun à toutes les sciences humaines et sociales ?

•« Les arts dans la ville, la ville dans les arts ». Comment l’art urbain se manifeste-t-il ? Comment la ville est-elle traitée dans les arts ? Les graffitis, films, littératures, musiques ont-ils tendances à magnifier, ou au contraire à déprécier les villes ?
•« Villes et obscurité ». Les lieux, les temps ou les individus en marge, qui représentent l’aspect négatif parfois fantasmé des villes (la nuit, les squats, les SDF, prostitué(e)s…).
•« La ville comme utopie ». La ville durable (éco-quartiers, nature en ville…), la ville comme lieu de mixité sociale... mythes ou réalités ?
Les questionnements sont très nombreux, et l’appel à communication est volontairement peu exhaustif, de manière à laisser aux participants le loisir de proposer des interventions originales. Nous attendons des communications sur des terrains variés, lointains ou non, et des approches qui sortent de l’ordinaire, ces thèmes étant très débattus depuis les années 1980.

La date limite de réception des propositions est le 10 janvier 2010 sous la forme d'un résumé de l'intervention d'une page maximum, accompagné de 5 mots clés, des nom, prénom, e-mail, fonction, laboratoire, et université de l'auteur(e).

"Voor het eerst in de geschiedenis woont meer dan de helft van de wereldbevolking in steden – vaak in sloppenwijken – en de mondiale trek naar de stad gaat door. Wat bepaalt de kwaliteit van leven in de stad? En hoe houden we de stad leefbaar? De VPRO duikt in het stadsleven op zoek naar nieuwe ideeën en maakt de balans op. Maakt de mens de stad of maakt de stad de mens?

Wereldwijd is een gigantische verplaatsing van mensen gaande. Elk uur trekken 7.500 mensen van het platteland naar een stad. Zo moet een bewoner van New Delhi minstens zeven uur rijden om buiten de stad te komen. En wie van New York naar Washington D.C. reist, komt niet eens meer buiten de stedelijke omgeving. Van de 3 miljard stadsbewoners op de wereld woont nu een derde in een sloppenwijk en dat aantal neemt snel toe. Over twintig jaar woont tweederde van de wereldbevolking in steden.

Juist nu veel steden uit hun voegen barsten, heeft de mondiale kredietcrisis overal ter wereld bouwprojecten lamgelegd. De stad staat onder druk en is daardoor meer dan ooit het speelveld van belangen en conflicten geworden. Maar de crisis biedt ook nieuwe mogelijkheden. Het is dus tijd om op nieuwe manieren naar de stad te kijken. Niet alleen als ruimte, maar ook als manier van leven, als kans en als mentaliteit. Wat betekent het om nooit meer de stad uit te komen? Hoe willen we de stad en vooral: hoe doen we dat?

De VPRO brengt vijf nieuwe televisiedocumentaires (in coproductie met de 4e Internationale Architectuur Biënnale Rotterdam), vijf nieuwe radiodocumentaires en vijf nieuwe internetprojecten, waaronder het audiovisueel archief OPEN CITY (video sinds 1913, radio sinds 1926 – in aanbouw) én de festivalwebsite eeuwvandestad.nl. Op deze site leveren stadbewoners ideeën om het leven in hun stad te verbeteren, wordt door stadsexperts geblogd en bieden kunstenaars CITY ONE MINUTES (stadsportretten-van-één-minuut), en WERELDSTRATEN naast BIJZONDERE STADSWANDELINGEN aan. Bovendien zetten bekende VPRO-programma’s als De Avonden, Buitenhof, Andere Tijden, Boeken, Draadstaal, Tegenlicht, Metropolis en Holland Doc in deze periode verstedelijking op de agenda."

"Tijdens de Ruimteconferentie die het Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving (PBL) op dinsdag 3 november organiseert, treden Edward Soja en Carolyn Steel op als keynote speakers. Soja (hoogleraar Urban Planning, UCLA) is een van de meest vooraanstaande deskundigen op het gebied van stad en verstedelijking. Carolyn Steel (architect) is auteur van het spraakmakende boek 'Hungry City'.

De Ruimteconferentie biedt een platform voor onderzoekers, beleidsmakers en andere belangstellenden om elkaar te ontmoeten en hun kennis te delen op het brede terrein van de ruimtelijke ontwikkeling en de leefomgeving. Naast de twee keynote speakers (plenaire sessies aan het begin en einde van de conferentie) biedt de Ruimteconferenie een groot aantal thematisch georganiseerde workshops. Deze workshops op het snijvlak van wetenschap en beleid duren ongeveer vijf kwartier. Elke workshop bestaat uit 3 presentaties, gevolgd door een discussie met de toehoorders. Er zijn steeds ongeveer 10 parallelle sessies op uiteenlopende thema’s.

Voor de workshops hebben we de volgende thema’s benoemd:

Perhaps even more important is the task of ensuring that diverse sections of the population can live together in harmony within mega-cities. The conference turns the spotlight on large- and small-scale initiatives, on proven as well as ground-breaking strategies. The role of the public sector and of institutional parties will be redefined on the basis of these examples, with case studies that include Pittsburgh, Chicago, London, Paris, Hamburg, Mumbai, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

The MORGEN/TOMORROW congress is a joint initiative of the City of Amsterdam, the Netherlands Institute for Spatial Planning and Housing (NIROV) and the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM).

The MORGEN/TOMORROW congress coincides with the 2009 edition of the International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam (IABR). The theme of this year’s IABR is ‘Open City: Designing Coexistence’, and the 2009 edition’s Curator is Kees Christiaanse, a partner in KCAP as well as Professor of Architecture and Urban Design at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETHZ). The biennale opens on Thursday, 24 September at the Netherlands Architecture Institute in Rotterdam, while Amsterdam’s contribution, ‘The Free State of Amsterdam’ presentation, opens on Saturday, 26 September at the former Shell canteen on the Northern Bank of the IJ waterway in Amsterdam. In preparation, throughout the month of September the VPRO will be broadcasting a whole raft of radio and television programmes related to the ‘Urban Century’."

Summer school: "Penser la ville - Penser Bruxelles"

The summer school "Penser la ville - Penser Bruxelles" addresses itself to a diverse audience (researchers, students, teachers, and others). Cosmopolis researchers Eric Corijn and Benedikte Zitouni will be participating with lectures on: "Une ville n'est pas un pays" and "Le ver aux ailes d'aigle ou la pratique des archives".

The course will take place from 26 to 28 August 2009 at the Université Libre de Bruxelles - Campus Plaine.
